Washington Update: 50-State Strategy – A Call to Action

We are continuing our nationwide 50-State Strategy to engage Senators and Members of Congress across the United States. Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. will be the first regions where we launch a coordinated outreach campaign.

Our goal is clear: to demand accountability and justice for the ongoing human rights violations in Ethiopia—particularly the recent brutal massacre of young Ethiopian women in the Amhara region, whose bodies were mutilated by the Oromo terrorist group. These atrocities cannot go unanswered.

We urge all Ethiopian Americans and friends of Ethiopia to respectfully contact your U.S. Senators and Representatives and request that they invoke the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act against those responsible for these horrific crimes.

Background on the Global Magnitsky Act

The Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act (Title XII, Subtitle F of P.L. 114-328, as amended; 22 U.S.C. §§10101 et seq.) authorizes the President to impose economic sanctions and deny entry into the United States to foreign individuals involved in human rights abuses or corruption.

Originally enacted in December 2016 and permanently reauthorized in April 2022 (Section 6 of P.L. 117-110), the law is implemented through Executive Order 13818 (December 2017). It remains one of the strongest legal mechanisms available to hold perpetrators accountable globally.

Subject: Urgent Appeal to Prevent Civil War and Protect Human Rights in Ethiopia

Dear Senator / Representative,

I am writing as an Ethiopian American deeply concerned about the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia. I respectfully urge you to take immediate action to help prevent further bloodshed and to promote peace, justice, and stability in the region.

I want to express my sincere appreciation for your leadership and commitment to justice and human rights. Your advocacy offers hope to millions of Ethiopians who long for peace and democracy.

I urge you to:

  • Condemn the atrocities committed by the Ethiopian government and armed groups;
  • Call for an immediate end to drone strikes and military actions targeting civilians;
  • Invoke the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act to sanction those responsible for human rights violations; and
  • Support a negotiated political settlement and an inclusive, democratic constitution.

The continued silence of the international community only emboldens perpetrators of violence and deepens the suffering of innocent civilians—especially among the Amhara people and Orthodox Christian communities, who are facing targeted persecution.

Your leadership at this critical moment can help bring accountability and hope to a nation in crisis.

Thank you for your attention and for standing up for justice and human rights.

Sincerely,
