Garcetti Sworn in as US Ambassador to India

Washington, DC – Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was sworn in by Vice President Harris as the new US ambassador to India. The US has been without an ambassador to India since January 2021.

“It feels great. Can’t wait to serve,” Garcetti commented after the swearing in ceremony in Harris’ office. “I’m so honored the vice president did this today.”

The Senate voted to confirm Garcetti 52 to 42, with seven Republican senators voting in his favor, and three Democrats voting against.

Garcetti was first nominated for the post in July 2021, but his nomination was blocked by the allegations of misconduct against his former aide Rick Jacobs. Garcetti denied any knowledge of the alleged misconduct.

Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu met with Eric Garcetti to discuss priorities in strengthening the India – US bilateral partnership. “Congratulated @ericgarcetti on his swearing-in as the Ambassador of US to India. As he prepares to depart for India, we discussed some immediate priorities in deepening the bilateral partnership, in line with our Leaders’ vision. Look forward to working with Eric,” Ambassador Sandhu tweeted.

“US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) is delighted with the confirmation of Mayor Eric Garcetti as the next U.S. Ambassador to India,” said Dr. Mukesh Aghi, President and CEO of USISPF. “Having led Los Angeles, one of the most vibrant cities in the world, Mayor Garcetti understands that working with alI stakeholders will be essential in moving forward the most significant relationship of the 21st century, the U.S.- India partnership. The U.S. and India partnership is a bipartisan priority. We have much to accomplish in 2023 and beyond, starting with the Quad Summit, a potential State visit, and a list of G-20 activities. USISPF is proud to support Ambassador Garcetti in his new role and wishes him all the success.”
